Roofs in Egypt and across the Gulf face relentless sun, wide day-night temperature swings, dust, and occasional heavy winter rain that exposes every weak detail. Polyurea roof waterproofing handles these conditions well because it forms a seamless, highly elastic membrane. The real question, however, is which polyurea, and Krypton’s note on pure polyurea vs hybrid on roofs explains why “polyurea” alone is not a specification. Here is how to turn that into a practical choice.

Why polyurea works on hot-climate roofs
- No seams. It goes on as one continuous layer around pipes, plinths and falls, so there are no laps to open up.
- High elongation. Values range from 324% for Rayston to 400% for the hybrids, so the membrane follows thermal movement of the slab.
- Fast return to service. According to its TDS, Impermax Polyurea H is rain-resistant after about 15 minutes and takes light foot traffic after about 1 hour.
One clarification: polyurea is a waterproofing membrane, not thermal insulation. Reducing heat gain is therefore the job of insulation or a reflective finish, rather than the polyurea itself.
Pure polyurea: Polyurea Rayston
Rayston is a hot-spray pure polyurea. It carries CE marking to EN 1504-2 and holds European Technical Assessment ETA 16/0148 (ETAG 005). In addition, it holds BBA certificate 18/5582 for flat and pitched roofs with limited or pedestrian access. That certificate estimates a service life in excess of 25 years. You can also view the BBA 18/5582 listing on NBS. Its TDS values are:
- 324% elongation, 16.2 MPa tensile strength, Shore 87A/35D;
- watertight to 5 bar (EN 12390-8);
- colours: light grey, dark grey, rust red and blue.
Because Rayston is an aromatic polyurea, it needs a UV-resistant topcoat such as Impertrans or Colodur on exposed roofs.
Hybrid polyurea: Impermax Polyurea H
Impermax Polyurea H, a hot-spray hybrid membrane, suits roofs, terraces and balconies. It also works as a protective skin over spray polyurethane foam. Its TDS values fall into three groups.
Technical assessment
- ETA 11/062 gives W2 (10 years) without topcoat, but W3 (25 years) with Impertrans Pigmented.
Mechanical properties
- 400% elongation, 15 MPa tensile strength, Shore 90A/40D;
- crack bridging A5 at -10 °C as well as B4.2 at 23 °C;
- 5.6 MPa adhesion to concrete when primed with EP100.
Fire and durability
- external fire rating Broof(t1)/(t2);
- root resistance to EN 13948;
- hail resistance to EN 13583.
In short, the hybrid’s longer service-life category depends on the topcoat. Under strong sun, the finish is part of the system rather than an extra.

A no-topcoat option: H Flex Alum
When fewer layers are the goal, Impermax Polyurea H Flex Alum comes in an aluminium colour that does not yellow. It also needs no aliphatic topcoat and is antistatic. Before spraying, check its application limits:
- air temperature between 10 and 40 °C;
- relative humidity below 85%;
- wind above 25 km/h affects spraying, which matters especially on high-rise and coastal roofs.
Finally, it reaches about 90% of its final properties after 2 days.
Pure vs hybrid: how to choose
| Criterion | Polyurea Rayston (pure) | Impermax Polyurea H (hybrid) |
|---|---|---|
| Key approvals | CE EN 1504-2, ETA 16/0148, BBA 18/5582, WRAS | ETA 11/062 |
| Elongation | 324% | 400% |
| UV exposure | Impertrans or Colodur topcoat | W3, 25 years with Impertrans Pigmented |
| Other typical uses | Potable water tanks, foundations, WWTP | Over PU foam, terraces, balconies |
As a rule of thumb, write the commercial name and the chemistry on the same line of the spec, for example “Polyurea Rayston, pure polyurea”. Never accept substitutions just because “both are polyurea”. After all, certificates do not transfer between products.

Common roof mistakes to avoid
- Skipping the topcoat. Aromatic polyureas change colour when UV reaches them. For this reason, Krypton advises choosing dark grey or red, or adding a topcoat.
- Spraying at midday in summer. The substrate limit is 40 °C, but hot-climate roofs exceed it easily.
- No primer. A missing primer is the classic cause of bubbles.

FAQ
What is the best roof waterproofing for hot climates?
A seamless, elastic membrane with a UV-resistant finish handles sun and thermal movement best. Hot-spray polyurea is therefore one of the strongest options.
Does polyurea insulate against heat?
No, it only waterproofs. In contrast, heat reduction needs insulation or a reflective finish.
How long does a polyurea roof last?
BBA 18/5582 estimates more than 25 years for Rayston on roofs. Meanwhile, ETA 11/062 rates Polyurea H at W3 (25 years) with Impertrans Pigmented, or W2 (10 years) without it.
How soon can you walk on it?
Impermax Polyurea H is rain-resistant after about 15 minutes, while light foot traffic is possible after about 1 hour.
